Frequently Asked Questions
How does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by using thin, sterile, one-time use needles to stimulate specific points on the body. From a Western medicine perspective Acupuncture works by stimulating the central nervous system. Most acupuncture points tend to sit where there are high concentrations of nerve endings, blood vessels and muscles fibers. When the needle is inserted it stimulates the body to release chemicals into the muscles, brain and spinal cord which may regulate hormones, calm the nervous system, change pain signals and stimulate the body to heal itself. Additionally the Acupuncture meridians closely follow the fascial (connective tissue) pathways that run from our superficial body( where the needles are inserted) to our internal systems , all the way to our organs.
By inserting a needle into the fascial pathway externally we produce neurochemical release as well as stimulate healing in the whole pathway. These Fascial pathways are the structural foundation for the Chinese Medicine concept of the Meridians. Research suggests these fascial pathways have piezoelectric properties—the ability to generate electrical charges in response to mechanical stress or pressure. Needling can stimulate this bioelectricity, potentially acting as a mechanism for the sensation of \(Qi\) traveling through the body's meridians.
From a Chinese Medicine perspective there are pathways or “Meridians” through which “Qi” or energy flows to our organ system as well as our superficial muscles, bones and brain. I think of the meridians as an interconnected circuit. When Qi becomes blocked, energy as well as other vital energies such a as fluid and blood, cannot move through the circuit. This can cause a variety of dysfunctions both in the area that is stuck but in other parts of the body because of how it blocks the whole circuit from receiving energy, blood and fluids. These imbalances can affect our bodies physically, mentally and emotionally due to the interconnected nature of these systems and meridians. Acupuncture works to rebalance these meridians to increase health and prevent disease.

What is Community Acupuncture?
Community acupuncture is acupuncture done in a communal space. Often treatments are given on recliner chairs or massage tables in a large open space during set times of the week. This allows the practitioner to treat multiple people in the same space and help reduce costs for everyone. We offer sliding scale pricing with no income verification requirements. Ideally with the offering of community acupuncture patients will be able to get acupuncture more often and achieve their health goals faster.
How many treatments will I need?
That depends on the individual and the nature of the problem we will be treating. Generally the more chronic the condition the longer the treatment process will take to see results. Acute issues can generally be resolved in a few treatments.
What should I do after a treatment?
We advise most patients to take it easy after an Acupuncture treatment. After Acupuncture the body is often very relaxed. Musculature is looser and bones can shift easily. We advise people to avoid strenuous exercise particularly heavy lifting after treatment to avoid injury and to give your body time to recover. We also advise people to hydrate after Acupuncture treatments.
